Technology made building cheaper. We want to spend that on problems that matter.
Why we exist
Many of the problems that hold people back are not mysteries. Healthcare is hard to navigate. Skills go unrecognized. Talent is distributed and access is not. These problems persist because they are tedious, regulated, local, or unglamorous, and because building a company around any one of them used to take years before anyone learned whether it would work.
DonaLabs exists to work on these problems deliberately, one company at a time, and to get better at it each time.
Why now
The cost and time required to test an idea, build a product, conduct research, and operate a company have fallen sharply. A small team can now study a market, prototype a product, and run an operation in a fraction of the time it took a few years ago.
That changes which problems are worth attempting. Markets that were too small, too fragmented, or too service-heavy for a traditional startup become reachable when building and operating cost less.
What AI changed, and what it did not
AI does not make a company useful. It makes experimentation cheaper and operations lighter. We use it to shorten the distance between an insight and evidence, and to let small teams run services that once needed large ones.
It is leverage, not the mission. We are skeptical of products whose only idea is a model, and we expect every venture to be worth using for reasons that have nothing to do with how it was built.
Why a studio
A standalone startup carries its risk alone and discards most of what it learns when it fails or changes course. A studio keeps the research, the code, the infrastructure, the people, and the lessons. Each venture starts from a higher floor than the last.
It also makes stopping cheaper. An idea that fails validation costs weeks, not years, and what we learned stays with us.
The studio is not a consulting agency, a development shop, an accelerator, an incubator, or a fund. Some of our ventures sell services to their customers. The studio's own job is to find problems worth solving and form the companies that solve them.
What we mean by human potential
We mean something specific: whether a person can be healthy, do meaningful work, keep learning, and belong to a community that supports them.
- Health
- Thrive physically
- Work
- Thrive professionally
- Learning
- Thrive intellectually
- Community
- Thrive socially
Progress in one tends to make the others easier, and a person held back in one is usually held back in several. That is why we treat them as one mission rather than four markets.
How the pieces fit
- Research
- Finds the problem and earns the right to build.
- Technology
- Lowers the cost of trying, building, and operating.
- Talent
- Builds and runs the company. Over time, Dona Institute helps develop it.
- Capital
- Follows evidence, at the studio level or into individual ventures.
Where we are
DonaLabs was founded in 2025 and is based in Washington, D.C. It is early. Two ventures are in market, two are being built, and several questions are in research. We would rather be judged by the work than by claims about it.
